Alluvial" (i.e. deposited by a river) is the name given to extra-quality Dumortierite from Mozambique. The rough stones are transported from their place of origin by rivers and finally deposited. Only particularly hard stones survive this transportation route and are then processed into high-quality Tumbled Stones.

Dumortierite was first discovered in 1881 in a quarry in the French department of Rhône; the first scientific description was made by the mineralogist M.F. Gonnard. He named the newly discovered mineral in honor of the French paleontologist Eugène Dumortier (1801 - 1876). Occasional spellings such as dumorterite, dumortirite, dumortirite or dumoterite are therefore incorrect. The >name take-it-easy stone is also very common.
