Dumortierite was first discovered in 1881 in a quarry in the French department of Rhône; the first scientific description was made by the mineralogist M.F. Gonnard. He named the newly discovered mineral in honor of the French paleontologist Eugène Dumortier (1801 - 1876). Occasional spellings such as dumorterite, dumortirite, dumortirite or dumoterite are therefore incorrect.
Dumortierite is also known as the "take it easy stone", as the mineral is often used in gemstone healing when stressful things need to be released. The mineral stands for confidence, courage and relaxation, supports the lightness of being and helps to maintain or regain calm in times of anger, stress and hectic.
