The name Jet is derived from the well-known place of discovery near the river and the city of Gagas in Turkey. Other names are Jet/Jett, Jais, Jayet/Gayet, Pitchcoal, Blackstone, Agtstein, Ambranoir, Witwenstein, Succinum nigrum, Sapropelite and Gagatite.
The today rather uncommon synonyms Olti amber or black amber go back to the wrong assumption, Jet would have originated like amber from fossil tree resin.
