In many cultures, butterflies are considered a symbol of change and transformation due to their transformation from an inconspicuous caterpillar through pupation to a dazzling, colorful insect.

The name "Mookaite" is derived from the largest discovery site of the mineral in the Kennedy Range, about 1000km north of the Western Australian capital Perth. Mookaite is mined there along Mooka Creek. "Mooka" means "flowing water" in the Aboriginal language and refers to the numerous springs in the area. Spellings such as Mokaite, Mokaid, Mokaait or Moukait are therefore incorrect. The only synonym for Mookaite at present is Australian Jasper.
