The disthene (or cyanite, kyanite) is a very interesting mineral with unusual properties. The name cyanite is from the Greek and means "dark blue". The alternative name disthene stands for "two hardnesses".

According to stone medicine, disthene helps to remain capable of action in extems situations. It is said to promote logical-rational thinking and decisive action. Other themes are identity and completion of life's task.

This disthene comes from Brazil; the blue disthene is also known as kyanite or cyanite. The name disthene is derived from the Greek "this sthénos" (twofold strength, twofold power). This describes a quite unusual property of disthene: It shows - depending on the direction in the crystal - two very strongly deviating hardnesses (so-called hardness anisotropy). Spellings such as Distin, Disthin or Disten have not become established in the retail and wholesale trade.
