In the desert south of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco wind and strong temperature fluctuations have exposed the gray limestones and the fascinating fossils contained therein. These have lived about 300 million years ago in the Devonian Sea there.
Goniatites (from the Greek "angle, corner") have a spirally wound shell with many chambers. The goniatite lived in the outermost chamber, the other chambers were connected with a tube and filled with gas. For diving, the animal could flood one chamber after the next - submarines also work on this principle.
