The lucky fish has a prominent meaning in the Chinese tradition of special auspicious symbols for prosperity and career.
Especially goldfish, but also other strong colored fish are considered symbols of a lucky destiny. The tradition comes from the phonetic similarity of the two characters KUM and YU. These stand for goldfish as well as for gold and opulence. In addition to material prosperity, healthy, well-fed fish also symbolize marital happiness and harmony. Often representations of fish were part of wedding gifts.
