Chinese lucky symbol for protection and long life: turtle
The turtle has a central position in the Chinese tradition of special auspicious symbols. As one of the four divine carriers of the cardinal directions, the turtle represents the north, the direction of strongest yin energy. With the north is associated the night, as the season of winter, as well as rest and regeneration.
In other mythological traditions the turtle appears as a great helper. It is said to have helped the first emperor to tame the yellow river. Its real longevity also makes it an ideal symbol of long life.
