Gemstones cut in drop shape are also called penduloque, briolette or pendule; other names are pear cut, pear core cut or pear shape cut.
The name Onyx is derived from the Greek word "onyx" meaning "nail"; presumably this name, in use for many centuries, refers to the surface of the polished stone, which resemble shiny fingernails. Spellings like onix or onyk are therefore not correct.
