The elongated chips of Lapis Lazuli are about 9 - 15mm long and about 2 - 4mm wide; total length of the Lapis Lazuli strand about 40cm.

The name Lapis Lazuli is derived from the Latin terms "lapis" (stone) and lazulum (blue). Different spellings like lapis lazuli, lazulum or lapis lazuli are not correct. Due to the long fame of lapis lazuli, there are numerous synonyms. These include azure d'acre, azurum ultramarinum, bleu d'azure, lapis lazuli ultramarine, lazure stone/lazure stone, lazurium, oltremare, oriental blue, outremer lapis, pierre d'azur, ultramarine genuine, ultramarine ino/verdadero, ultramarine natural scythium.
