Hypersthene - an unusual mineral for gemstone earrings!

The round cabochons are 8mm in size and weigh 3.5ct. Overall, the Hypersthene ear jewelry is 0.9cm in diameter.

The settings of the stones are made of highly polished rhodium-plated silver 925; weight of the silver 1.3g.

Hypersthene got its name from the Greek "hyper" (over) and "stheos" (strength); this refers to its greater hardness compared to the closely related Bronzite. Spellings like hyperstene or hyperstehne are therefore not correct.

In 1988, Hypersthene was renamed Ferrosilite by the International Mineralogical Association. Synonyms for Hypersthene are Augite Bronzite, Iron Anthophyllite, Iron Enstatite, Ferroanthophyllite, Ficinite, Labrador Blende, Paulite, Schillerspat and Szaboite as well as Hyperstein.
