The name Apatite is derived from the Greek word "apatáo" for "to deceive" and was coined in 1786 by the German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749 - 1817). Since apatite occurs in numerous different forms and colors, there is a great danger that apatite will be confused with another mineral. Spellings like apartith, apathite, apatite, appatite or apatiet are not correct.
