Coated Quartz (Aura Quartz): Treatment, Metals, and Labeling in Retail
What is Aura Quartz?
Aura Quartz (also known as Coated Quartz) is natural rock crystal (SiO₂) whose surface has been finished with an ultra-thin layer of metal. Common trade names include Angel Aura, Aqua Aura, Rainbow Aura, and Titanium Aura.
Important: The quartz itself remains in its natural state - only the surface is treated. The iridescent colors are created exclusively by the metallic coating.
How is the coating created?
Aura quartz is produced using modern vacuum technology:
Selection of natural quartz crystals
1. Thorough cleaning
2. Placement in a vacuum chamber
3. Evaporation of metals at high temperature
4. Deposition of metal atoms on the surface (PVD/CVD process)
5. Cooling and finishing
The coating is only a few nanometers thick and bonds permanently with the crystal surface.
Which metals are used?
Different metals are used depending on the variant:
Angel Aura
Metals: Gold or gold + platinum
Effect: Delicate, pastel-colored rainbow shimmers
Aqua Aura
Metal: Gold
Effect: Bright, intense blue
Rainbow Aura (Mystic Aura)
Metals: Titanium, often combined with niobium
Sometimes: Gold, silver, or platinum (in trace amounts)
Effect: Strong, rainbow-like color play
Titanium Aura, Titanium Quartz
Metal: Titanium
Effect: Metallic iridescent, intense colors
Note: There is no standardized formula. Manufacturers vary metal combinations and coating thicknesses.
Why does Aura Quartz shimmer in rainbow colors?
The colors are created by thin-film interference: Light is reflected at different interfaces and overlaps. This creates iridescent color effects – similar to soap bubbles or oil on water.
Durability & Care
Aura Quartz is stable but should be handled gently:
+ No harsh cleaning agents
+ No ultrasonic cleaning
+ Not suitable for soldering
+ Ideal for pendants, collectibles, and jewelry with low wear and tear
Declaration in Retail
For sales purposes, correct labeling is important: Recommended trade name: "Coated Rock Crystal (Aura Quartz)"
This clearly communicates that it is a natural mineral with a surface treatment.
