How do the “snowflakes” form in Obsidian?

The characteristic pattern is created by a process known as “deglassing” of the obsidian. During this process, crystalline structures slowly form within the originally amorphous obsidian mass. Small gray Feldspar aggregates develop, whose shapes resemble snowflakes, clouds, or flowers.

This unique structure also gives rise to other names for the stone: snowflake obsidian is sometimes called flower obsidian, cloud obsidian, or, for short, snow obsidian.
