The mineral Barite received its name after the Greek word barĂ½s (heavy); the spellings Barit, Baryth, Barite or Bariet, which are occasionally encountered in retail and wholesale trade, are therefore not correct. Also the mining name "barite" points to the high density of 4.5 g/cm3.
