The name Kyanite comes from the Greek. It is made up of the words "dis" ("twofold") and "sthenos" ("strength") and therefore means "twofold strength". The name refers to a special mineralogical property of the mineral: its direction-dependent hardness. Kyanite (mineralogically correct: kyanite) has different hardness values along the crystal axes - a rare peculiarity among precious stones and gemstones. The internationally accepted mineralogical name according to the IMA is kyanite (from the Greek "kyanos" = "blue"), while in German-speaking countries the name Kyanite is traditionally used.
