These fossilized araucaria logs from Madagascar are approximately 220 million years old and serve as fascinating testaments to Earth’s history. The log sections, measuring about 10–15 cm, come from the Ankavandra region and captivate with their varied colors, shapes, and natural grain patterns.
Particularly striking is the contrast between the natural, rough exterior and the smooth, polished cut surface. Careful polishing beautifully highlights the wood’s original structure. Structures resembling growth rings, fine grain patterns, and unique color patterns make each log section a one-of-a-kind decorative piece and collector’s item.
How is Petrified Wood formed?
About 220 million years ago, the ancestors of today’s araucarias grew in Madagascar. These evergreen conifers belong to a very ancient group of plants, representatives of which still have localities today primarily in the Southern Hemisphere.
When a dead tree trunk is covered by sand, mud, or other sediments, a fascinating process can begin under favorable conditions: Mineral-rich water penetrates the wood. Over the course of millions of years, the organic material is gradually replaced by minerals such as chalcedony, quartz, or jasper. In the process, the fine structures of the original wood are preserved.
Thus, a former tree trunk is transformed into a stone replica that still shows us today what the wood looked like millions of years ago.
A piece of prehistory you can touch! These fossilized tree trunks are fascinating specimens for anyone interested in fossils, plants, and the history of the Earth. In particular, the direct comparison between the rough outer surface and the polished cross-section brings the fossilization process to life.
