This decorative slab of star rhyolite weighs approximately 180–220 g; the gemstone slab measures approximately 7–9 x 12–14 cm.
The term “star jasper,” commonly used in the trade, is incorrect, as this is a young rhyolite rock. The brown matrix consists of quartz and Feldspar, and the white inclusions are also Feldspar. Therefore, the mineralogically correct term is star rhyolite.
Other names used for this mineral in both wholesale and retail include “Star Oregon Jasper,” “Star Oregon Jaspis,” “Star Jasper,” “Flower Jasper,” “Starburst Jasper,” and “Firework Jasper.”
