An exciting new find from Mozambique: Salamander chalcedony!

Typical for this gemstone are the yellow dots on a dark matrix, which have also given the mineral its trade name salamander chalcedony. In English-speaking countries, this dark brown chalcedony is known as yellow dot jasper.

Size of the puffy hearts approx. 4.5 x 4.0 cm.

Investigations by the EPI Institute revealed that the gemstone consists almost entirely of chalcedony. In addition to chalcedony, only iron oxides (goethite), which are responsible for the color, were found in the thin section. The few microscopically recognizable structures suggest that it may have once been a biogenic, carbonate material that was transformed into chalcedony.
