In modern gemstone healing, apatite is valued for its activating effect. On a spiritual level, apatite is used to increase openness and sociability. The motivating effect of the mineral can add variety to life.

The name apatite is derived from the Greek word "apatáo" for "to deceive" and was coined in 1786 by the German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749 - 1817). Since apatite occurs in numerous different forms and colors, there is a great danger that apatite will be confused with another mineral. Spellings such as apartite, apathite, apatite, appatite or apatiet are incorrect.
