Gryphaea – Fossil Oyster from Madagascar
A piece of Earth’s history for your fossil collection! The Gryphaea fossil oyster lived in shallow seas approximately 135 to 208 million years ago. Its characteristically curved shell and clearly visible growth rings make every specimen an interesting collector’s item.
Gryphaea – an extraordinary shell from prehistoric times
This extinct oyster originally had two differently shaped shells: a large, strongly arched shell—also known as a “toenail” because of its shape—and a smaller, flat cover shell. The animal lived between these two shells.
In the fossils, only the large, curved shell has been preserved. Its unusual shape and growth rings make it particularly interesting.
