River mussels lived in freshwater bodies millions of years ago. Like their modern relatives, they had two shell halves that protected their soft bodies. They lived on the bottom of bodies of water and fed on tiny food particles that they filtered from the water.

After the mussel died, its shell was covered by sediments. Over the course of millions of years, this led to the formation of a fossil that today offers us a fascinating glimpse into the wildlife of the Jurassic period.
