Current: Fossilized coprolite, 7 cm

This coprolite from Antananarivo, Madagascar, is about 200 million years old and is an extraordinary fossil from the age of the dinosaurs. Measuring approximately 6–8 cm, this find is a fascinating testament to long-gone ecosystems.

What is a coprolite? Coprolites are fossilized excrement from prehistoric animals. While this may sound a bit unusual at first, it is extremely interesting to scientists! That’s because fossilized feces can provide valuable clues about what animals ate millions of years ago and how they lived.

For a coprolite to form, the droppings must be quickly covered by mud, sand, or other sediments. Under favorable conditions, they become mineralized over time. This allows even such a perishable material to survive for millions of years. An extraordinary fossil for young dinosaur fans
