The name Charoite is derived from the place where it is found near the Russian river Chara. The German name Tscharoit would actually be more correct for the gemstone, but this has not caught on in the wholesale trade. Occasional spellings such as chaoirt, caroite, charoid or charoiet, on the other hand, are not correct.
