Edison pearls are a special type of modern freshwater cultured pearl. Unlike classic nucleus-free freshwater pearls, they are cultivated—similar to saltwater cultured pearls—using a small, round mother-of-pearl nucleus. Over an extended period, the oyster deposits high-quality layers of mother-of-pearl around this nucleus. This cultivation technique, which has been in use for about 15 years, produces particularly large freshwater pearls with an intense luster and excellent surface quality.
