Rhyolite is also referred to as Eye Care Stones, Eye Care Jasper, Rain Forest Jasper, Rain Forest Jasper or Meta-Rhyolite in gemstone healing literature. The mineral is used to reinforce what already exists without changing it. In this way, one's own situation can be clearly recognized and appreciated; self-acceptance is strengthened.

The first scientific description of rhyolite was made in 1860 by Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen (1833 - 1905). The name rhyolite is derived from the two Greek words "rhein" (to flow) and "lithos" (stone) and alludes to the volcanic Occurrence. Of various possible spellings, e.g. rhiolite, riolite, ryholite or ryolite, rhyolite has become established in the retail and wholesale trade. Eye jasper is a well-known synonym; the terms quartz porphyry and liparite are obsolete.
