Rhyolite is also referred to as jungle jasper, eye stone, eye jasper, rain forest jasper, rain forest stone or meta-rhyolite in the stone healing literature. The mineral is used to reinforce what already exists without changing it. Thus, one's own situation can be clearly recognized and self-appreciated; self-acceptance is strengthened.

The first scientific description of rhyolite was made in 1860 by Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen (1833 - 1905). The name rhyolite is derived from the two Greek words "rhein" (to flow) and "lithos" (stone) and alludes to the volcanic formation. Of several possible spellings, e.g. rhiolite, riolite, ryholite or ryolite, rhyolite has prevailed in retail and wholesale. Eye jasper is a well-known synonym; the terms quartz porphyry and liparite are outdated.
