Atacama Opal is an Opalite-Chrysocoll-Chalcedony mixture whose intense green-blue color is caused by Copper. At the localities where the rough is found (near Copiapó and Paipote in the Región de Atacama, northern Chile), the stone is referred to as Atacama Opal or Atacama Opalite; this name has also become established in the international mineral trade.
