Pyrite, also known as fool's gold, is an iron sulfide. Its main components are iron and sulphur - sometimes you can even smell the typical smell of sulphur!

The meaning of the name Pyrite is derived from the Greek word "pyr", meaning "fire". The early people used Pyrite when there were no matches to make fire. To do this, they used a hard flint to chip off small pieces of the pyrite crystal, which then ignited.

In stone medicine, Pyrite is said to be an effective aid in self-knowledge and awareness of one's own shadow side. The vernacular also calls Pyrite "health stone", because the mineral was used in earlier times to clarify the causes of complaints and to support recovery. Today rather uncommon names for Pyrite are liver iron ore, liver gravel and liver stroke.
