Meteorites are rare and valuable, because most of the shooting stars that reach planet Earth burn up as they enter the atmosphere. Only in rare cases do fragments of Meteorites reach the Earth's surface and land there in areas where they are protected from weathering. Most meteorites fall into the oceans.
Tektites are not extraterrestrial matter, but are formed when Meteorites strike the Earth and liquefy terrestrial rock. From some Meteorites, e.g. the Nördlinger Ries, only the crater and the corresponding Tektites are preserved.
