In stone medicine Magnetite is used to strengthen the orientation; so it is easier to distinguish useful from useless.

The name "Magnetite" is derived from the magnetic attraction of the mineral, which varies in strength depending on where it is found. In China, this special property of Magnetite has been known since the 11th century; in Europe, Pliny the Elder (23 - 79 AD) wrote the first description. He derived the name from a shepherd named Magnes, who reported that the nails of his shoes stuck to the ground. Other theories trace the term Magnetite back to the name of places or regions where lumps of iron ore with magnetic properties have been found.

The synonyms for the Magnetite point to the mineralogical composition of the mineral: Eisenmohr, Eisenmulm, Eisenoxydoxydul, Ferroferrit as well as Hammerschlag. Other names for the Magnetite are magnetite iron ore, magnetite ironstone, magnetic ironstone, morpholite and sealstone.
