Strontianite was first found in 1790 by Adair Crawford near the Scottish village of Strontian in the western Highlands. Strontian was the first mineral ever found in Scotland; the new find was described by the German physician and naturalist Friedrich Gabriel Sulzer (1749 - 1830) and named after the place where it was found (so-called type locality). Spellings such as stontiatite or stronthianite are therefore incorrect.
