The name apatite is derived from the Greek word "apatáo" meaning "to deceive" and was coined in 1786 by the German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749 - 1817). Spellings such as apartite, apathite, apatite, appatite or apatiet are incorrect.
