Gabbro got its name from the Tuscan town of Gabbro, near where the mineral was first found and described. Occasional spellings such as Gabro, Gappro or Gabbra are therefore incorrect. As Gabbro occasionally has a blue tinge, the mineral is also known as indigogabbro.
