Mineralogically, it is an approx. 3.2 billion year old green slate, a metamorphic rock. Fuchsite (chrome mica) and clinochlore have given the budstone its intense green color. Other minerals may include rutile, eskolaite, plagioclase and kaolinite.
Due to its similar optical effect, budstone is often used as a substitute for Prase, which is now rarely available.
