A Very Special Shape: The Phoenix Wings

The ergonomic shape of the Phoenix Wings, designed to fit the hand and its natural contours, opens up numerous application possibilities. The flat side is ideal for placing on the body, while the fine ridge along the “back of the wing” allows for gentle and precise stroking motions. The pleasantly rounded points make it particularly comfortable to perform targeted applications.

In addition, the Phoenix Wings are suitable for energizing the head area, working on the thymus chakra, releasing energy blockages, and for various massage techniques. They also feel pleasant to hold as palm stones and accompany relaxing moments in everyday life.

Phoenix Wings—the concept of an extraordinary massage stone

The phoenix is a mythical bird that, according to legend, burns and is reborn from its own ashes. To this day, it stands as a symbol of renewal, transformation, and a powerful new beginning. The idiom “like a phoenix rising from the ashes” describes something that seemed lost but returns with renewed strength. In late antiquity, the phoenix was regarded as a symbol of immortality; in Christianity, it became a symbol of resurrection.

This symbolism forms the foundation of the Phoenix concept of Edelstein Balance®. It is designed to help people consciously embrace change, draw new strength, and emerge stronger from challenging life situations. The Phoenix Wings symbolize growth, confidence, and the courage to break new ground—toward greater freedom, Joie de vivre, and fulfillment.

This is how the name “Phoenix” was formed—as an expression of a concept that centers on transformation and inner strength.

Instructions and Applications with Phoenix Wings

Preparation

Whether you use the Phoenix Wings for your personal well-being or in a therapeutic or professional setting—begin each session with awareness and mindfulness. The focus is on the intention to support a specific issue or a process of change.

Before the session, take a few minutes to ask yourself: What do I want to support or transform with the Phoenix Wings? A brief retreat from daily life, a few calm breaths, or a quiet spot in nature can help you gather your thoughts and focus your attention on the present moment.

The following instructions include easy-to-follow exercises as well as simplified elements from the Phoenix training and the Phoenix massage ritual. They serve as an introduction to working with the Phoenix Wings and invite you to discover its many possible applications for yourself.

Phoenix Meditation

With your chosen Phoenix Wings, find a quiet and undisturbed place where you feel comfortable. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and hold the stone in your hand.

Turn your attention inward and articulate—out loud if you like—the issue or area of your life that you wish to consciously support or positively transform.

Then explore the Phoenix Wings with all your senses: Feel their shape, the curved spine of the wing, the gently rounded points, and the flat side. Allow yourself to fully immerse in the moment and notice how the stone feels in your hand.

After a few minutes, slowly open your eyes and look at the Phoenix Wings in the light—either in your hand or on a surface in front of you. Observe the thoughts, images, or feelings that form without judging them. Let them come and go, like clouds in the sky. Perhaps this will reveal new perspectives or solutions that have remained hidden from you until now.

You may also recall a personal goal or a heartfelt wish that has taken a back seat in your daily life. This conscious recollection can give you new strength and encourage you to take the next steps with confidence.

Then place the Phoenix Wings in a beautiful, prominent spot. That way, they can remind you of your intention time and again in your daily life. Perhaps you’d like to arrange them with flowers, candles, or other personal items—there are no limits to your creativity.

Boost Concentration and Stimulate the Mind

Do you sometimes feel unfocused or as if you have “a board in front of your head”? Then this simple exercise can help you consciously activate your mind and create a moment of focus.

Hold the Phoenix Wings in your hand with the flat side facing down. Your thumb will usually find its way quite naturally to the point of the stone and glide gently along the curved back of the wing. This creates a calm, steady movement that feels pleasant and relaxing.

In Edelstein Balance®, this technique is used to consciously focus on the head area via the thumb’s reflex zones and to promote mindfulness.

Perform all movements slowly and without applying pressure. Often, just a few minutes are enough to mindfully integrate the exercise into your daily routine.

Note: Since this technique may be perceived as stimulating, it is recommended to perform it preferably during the day or when you want to concentrate on work or remain mentally present.

Phoenix Wings on the Thymus Chakra

In Edelstein Balance®, special attention is given to the area of the thymus chakra—located between the heart and throat chakras, above the sternum. It is traditionally associated with themes such as one’s own potential, inner sincerity, a sense of responsibility, and the ability to consciously follow one’s own path. In many holistic approaches, this area is also symbolically linked to setting boundaries and dealing with external influences.

Application

Place the selected Phoenix Wing directly on your sternum and take 5 to 10 minutes to consciously focus your attention on this area. Breathe calmly and observe any thoughts, feelings, or physical sensations that arise.

Supplementing the Application

You can combine this application with other products from the Edelstein Balance® line:

For example, the Phoenix Wings made of Magnesite can be combined with the Edelstein Balance® “Serenity” oil and the eye pillow of the same name. This creates a harmoniously coordinated treatment ritual.

Seminars on the use of the Phoenix Wings

Practical Tip

If the stone on your sternum feels too heavy or uncomfortable, simply remove it or adjust its position.

Also try different orientations:

  • lengthwise on the sternum,
  • across the sternum, or
  • slightly offset in a position that feels comfortable to you.

In the Phoenix Massage Ritual, the Phoenix Wings are additionally rotated one after another in the four cardinal directions. This movement symbolizes the harmonious interplay of body, soul, spirit, and mind.

Phoenix Energy Balance

Sometimes we long for change but feel that we lack the necessary strength or inner balance. The Phoenix Energy Balance invites you to consciously take time for a moment of calm and mindfulness.

Take two Phoenix Wings made of the same type of stone in your hands and hold them loosely for a few minutes. Focus your attention on your breath and notice how the stones feel in your hands. In the Gemstone Balance® method, this exercise is used to consciously perceive and harmonize the connection between the right and left sides of the body—symbolizing the mind and emotions.

Usage Tip

Be sure to drink plenty of fluids before and after the practice. A glass of water supports this mindful ritual and contributes to your overall well-being.

If you’d like to enhance your session, you can choose a matching Edelstein Balance® Gemstone Water blend. For example, if you’re using a Rose Quartz Phoenix Wing, you can combine it with the “Joie de vivre” water blend. In addition to Rose Quartz, this blend also contains Ruby and Garnet, complementing the theme of your session. The corresponding Edelstein Balance® “Joie de vivre” massage oil is also available, allowing the water, oil, and Phoenix Wings to be used in harmonious combination.

The Phoenix Wings are intentionally crafted from a single type of stone. The complementary Gemstone Balance® products expand on the respective theme with additional carefully selected gemstones, thereby enabling a holistic treatment ritual.

Massage with the Phoenix Stones

For the massage, we recommend using an Edelstein Balance® massage oil that matches the selected stone. Warm the oil slightly in your hands before beginning the treatment.

Thanks to its ergonomic shape, the Phoenix Wings are particularly well-suited for gentle massage treatments. The stone glides comfortably, especially over the shoulders and shoulder blades. Hold the shoulder with one hand while massaging along and—as long as it feels comfortable—under the shoulder blade with the Phoenix Wings using gentle, arcing movements. By tilting the stone slightly, you can individually adjust the pressure and intensity of the massage.

The rounded point of the Phoenix Wings can be used for targeted applications. Along the back muscles or other tense areas of the body, it allows for a precise and controlled massage.

In Edelstein Balance®, professional treatments are often performed using two Phoenix Wings made of the same type of stone. This allows both sides of the body to be treated harmoniously and evenly.

Practical Tip

For relaxing treatments at home, you can soak the Phoenix Wings in warm water for a few minutes before the massage. The pleasant warmth enhances the sense of well-being and can make the massage particularly enjoyable.

Note: Phoenix Wings made of fluorite should only be warmed in lukewarm water, as fluorite can be sensitive to extreme temperature fluctuations.

Concluding and Winding Down a Phoenix Wings Treatment

Fundamentally, the Phoenix shape and the corresponding Edelstein Balance® theme are designed to transform aspects of life. After the treatment, you should return to the original question and pay attention to things that
may have changed in your perception:

• Do I perhaps have a different perspective on the issue now?
• Is there anything I myself contributed to that led to this outcome?
• What is my spontaneous impulse to DO something about this issue RIGHT NOW?

Experience shows that after the application, you feel calmer and often lighter. Things that need to be done are now simply taken care of. And that is precisely the point of the Phoenix concept: to take control of your own life again.

If we remain passive, we’ll find it hard to take action. If, on the other hand, we’re free and self-determined, it’s not so hard anymore to get things back on track. Even if the path sometimes leads through fire (overcoming obstacles), the phoenix symbolizes
the new strength that forms from transformation.

The seven Phoenix stones of Edelstein Balance® are designed for everyday use. They correspond to the seven themes—the seven pillars of resilience—to help you avoid falling into a “slump” in the first place. Every day offers new opportunities for change and transformation!

Your Phoenix Stones are meant to always remind you that it’s up to you to transform any situation so that you can emerge from it stronger. In this way, through transformation, you create free energy and new momentum for a life of happiness and harmony. Have confidence in yourself and take control of your life again!

Cleaning and Caring for the Phoenix Wings

Clean the Phoenix Wings after each use. This will help preserve the stone’s natural beauty for a long time.

To cleanse the stone with amethyst, simply place it on an amethyst geode or a piece of amethyst geode. The energy radiating from the crystal tips permeates the stones resting on it with the “cleansing information,” thereby releasing all foreign energy.

Instructions for Cleaning Gemstones

Afterward, store the Phoenix Wings in a clean and protected place where they are safe from damage and easily accessible when needed. Many users deliberately choose a special spot that reminds them of their personal goals and rituals.

Choosing the Right Phoenix Wings

There are various ways to choose the Phoenix Wings that resonate with you most at the moment. Simply choose the method that feels right for you. The Intuition Bowl is also an excellent tool for selecting the stone that’s right for you right now.

Follow Your Intuition

Lay out the different Phoenix Wings in front of you and look at them calmly. Often, a stone will immediately catch your eye or draw your attention in a special way. In Edelstein Balance®, this is seen as a sign that this stone can support you with your current concern.

With Your Eyes Closed

Place the Phoenix Wings in a small basket or pouch and select a stone with your eyes closed. This intuitive selection is traditionally used in Edelstein Balance® to find a suitable companion for your current life situation.

By Stone Type

Learn about the seven available stone types and their respective themes. Choose the Phoenix Wings whose theme particularly resonates with you at the moment or can support you with your personal concern.

Based on the scent of the Edelstein Balance® oils

If you have the Edelstein Balance® massage oils available—for example, as a mini set—you can also use their scents as a guide. Choose the scent that spontaneously triggers a positive response in you. The corresponding oil contains the gemstone whose theme is associated with the matching Phoenix Wings.

There is no “right” or “wrong”

Whichever path you choose—the key is that you feel comfortable with your Phoenix Wings and consciously incorporate them into your practice. Over time, you’ll often naturally develop a sense of which stone particularly resonates with you during a specific phase of your life.

How did the formation of the Phoenix Wings come about?

The idea for the Phoenix Wings originated in 2012 during the first joint Phoenix training series led by Monika Grundmann, Michael Gienger, and Karin Attner. As the concept evolved, it became clear that the theme of transformation and change required a treatment specifically designed for it within the Edelstein Balance® system. This led to the formation of the Phoenix massage ritual “Pressure and Transformation in Life.”

For this ritual, a stone form was sought that would combine different applications. However, existing shapes only partially met the requirements: Large Palmstones were too soft, spheres too round, and Styluses too pointy for some applications.

Together with the physical therapist, artist, and shaman Beate Erath, the first draft of what is now the Phoenix Wings was finally formed using a modeling material. Its shape combined all the desired characteristics:

  • A flat side for resting on
  • A curved wing back for gentle stroking
  • Rounded points for targeted applications
  • An ergonomic shape that fits comfortably in the hand
  • Compact size, making the Phoenix Wings suitable as a palm stone or travel companion

Translating this complex, three-dimensional shape into natural stone posed a particular challenge. In collaboration with Marco Schreier Mineralienhandlung GmbH, the design was further refined and ultimately crafted with meticulous attention to detail. After a development and optimization phase lasting approximately twelve months, the first Phoenix Wings made of amphibolite were formed.

Since amphibolite from the deposit used was available only in limited quantities, the idea subsequently arose to also offer the Phoenix Wings in the seven tried-and-true stone varieties of the Edelstein Balance® collection. Within the PHOENIX concept, each of these stone varieties represents one of seven themes designed to symbolically support personal resilience and the ability to consciously face challenges.

Thus, what began as an idea for a specialized massage tool evolved into the Phoenix Wings—a versatile companion for Edelstein Balance® treatments. The Phoenix concept is based on the shamanic “shield of life,” which brings the body, soul, spirit, and mind into harmony. By working with the Phoenix Wings, blocked life energy can flow freely again between these four realms.

The Limits of Self-Application

Massages have been used for centuries to promote well-being. The self-treatment methods described here are intended for relaxation and personal well-being. They are not a substitute for a medical, naturopathic, or therapeutic diagnosis or treatment.

If you experience any discomfort during or after a session, or if existing symptoms worsen, stop the treatment and seek medical or therapeutic evaluation to determine the cause.

Self-treatment with the Phoenix Wings should especially not be performed:

  • if you have a fever or acute inflammation,
  • in cases of contagious skin conditions,
  • on open wounds or injured skin,
  • after surgery, until healing is complete,
  • in cases of severe or unexplained illnesses,
  • in cases of pronounced varicose veins in the area to be treated, and
  • in cases of mental health conditions, only after consulting with a suitably qualified professional.

During pregnancy, as well as in cases of existing medical conditions or regular medication use, it is recommended that you consult your doctor, naturopath, or another qualified medical professional before undergoing treatment.

Since everyone reacts differently to touch and massage, all treatments are performed at your own risk. No guarantee of a specific outcome or effect can be provided.

Monika Grundmann – Developer of the Phoenix Wings

The Phoenix Wings and the treatments were developed by Monika Grundmann as part of the Edelstein-Balance® treatment concept. Monika Grundmann is one of the leading figures in modern gemstone therapy. With the Edelstein Balance® she developed, she has created a holistic concept that combines centuries-old knowledge of healing stones with contemporary applications.

From an early age, she studied the effects of gemstones on the body, mind, and spirit in depth. Drawing on many years of practical experience, keen intuition, and a deep understanding of energetic interconnections, the formation of Edelstein-Balance® occurred—a method that places the individual at the center and is geared toward balance, stability, and inner harmony.

As an author, speaker, and developer, she has been sharing her knowledge for many years and inspiring people to use gemstones consciously, respectfully, and meaningfully. With Edelstein-Balance®, she has created a method that combines clarity, structure, and depth—and continues to guide many practitioners on their personal journeys to this day.

Courses and Seminars on Gemstones and Their Applications

Edelstein-Balance® is a holistic, practice-oriented concept developed for use both in professional settings and for mindful application at home. The focus is on the individual and their unique needs for relaxation, balance, and inner stability.

In many beauty and massage studios, Edelstein-Balance® is used as a standalone or complementary method. The selected gemstones can be integrated into treatments to deepen periods of rest, promote body awareness, and support perception. They complement treatments such as facials or body treatments, massages, or relaxation rituals, creating a harmonious atmosphere that facilitates letting go and Regeneration. This is not about rigid routines, but rather a finely tuned interplay of touch, stillness, and mindful awareness. Edelstein-Balance® complements traditional treatments without overshadowing them and can be flexibly integrated into existing treatment concepts.

Even in a private setting, Edelstein-Balance® offers a simple yet mindful way to incorporate gemstones into daily life. At home, they can be used as aids for rest and relaxation—for example, during intentional breaks, relaxation exercises, or as a support for personal rituals. This practice leads to greater mindfulness and self-awareness.

Monika Grundmann says of herself: “Even as a child, I wanted to become a massage therapist. After a career as a civil servant, I took a detour and trained as a cosmetologist and pedicurist. After completing my training as a naturopath, I met Michael Gienger, and my enthusiasm for crystal healing ultimately led me to develop a concept for stone massages: the Edelstein-Balance®. This led to the formation of my book *Beauty Through Touch* and the book *Wellness Stones*, with Michael Gienger as editor. For many years, we worked together to spread the idea of a happy and free life on this planet. The stones were our companions.

I am a founding member of the nationwide Crystal Healing Network, a voluntary association of therapists; a founding member of the Fair Trade Minerals & Gems e.V. association; and, shortly after its founding, a member of Steinheilkunde e.V.

It gives me great joy to teach crystal healing in what I consider the most beautiful way—through mindful touch with people."
